Diffusing essential oils is one of the best ways to experience their therapeutic qualities, and the following essential simple essential oil diffuser recipes are the perfect place to start.
Benefits: Inhaling essential oils via aromatherapy practices stimulates the olfactory system of the body, allowing the therapeutic properties of the essential oils to enter the body via the nose. By using a diffuser the oils aren’t being heated, therefore they aren’t being damaged, they are simply being dispersed through the air at room temperature.
Blends: Below are some of my very favourite essential oil diffuser recipes that I use at home with my family. I have stated them exactly how I use them, but feel free to change the oils to meet your families needs.
The recommend dose for the particular Dōterra oil diffuser that I have is around 5 -12 drops per 100mls of water, but read the recommendations of your diffuser and adjust the recipes as required. I have also used Dōterra essential oils for these blends, but you can use the brand of oils you have instead if you don’t have Dōterra.
Right lets get started!

Clary sage and lavender make the ideal base fragrance for this calm diffuser blend because of their antidepressant properties. Floral notes always help to centre and calm my energy and the fragrance works perfectly when blended with 2 drops of fruity mandarin or tangerine essential oil. This is a gorgeous blend!
The Romance essential oil diffuser blend sets the mood perfectly for spending special time with a loved one. This divine romance oil has a base of rich ylang ylang, known for it’s aphrodisiac properties, yet is balanced with lively lemon and sweet and seductive rose germanium.
We have all suffered the misery that comes with the common cold. This diffuser oil blend has been created to soothe those aches and pains, and clear a stuffy nose. I use this refreshing blend even when everyone is well because I just love the refreshing fragrance. I have added lemon because it is known for its ability to increase circulation, which is ideal for boosting immunity. You could also add a couple of drops of lavender to calm the mind and body during illness.
This is a favourite calming and relaxing blend to use at bedtime. For the children I pop it in their rooms before they go to bed so the air is fresh and clean for a good healthy nights sleep. You could use sweet orange, wild orange or calming mandarin oil. They all work really well with bergamot which is known for its antidepressant properties. A true blend for the sweetest dreams.
Frankincense is one of my top 2 all time favourite oils, not only is it a daily must have for skin but it is an oil that has spiritual properties. If you don’t know much about this ancient oil I suggest googling the history and spiritual properties of frankincense. It is used to create a sense of complete calm and has been known to help open the third eye during meditation practices. I really enjoy this meditation blend, it is floral, earthy and grounding all at the same time.
A simple yet gorgeously sweet blend for promoting a sense of calm, peace and love for oneself. Take some time out of your busy day to diffuse these two oils, they are complete opposites, one is floral and one is citrus but balance out each other perfectly.
There are a few different immunity blends around but this is our family must have diffuser blend all through the year. We have healed some very serious medical issues with oregano oil in the past. Also if I could only choose one oil to have it would have to be tea tree essential oil because there is almost nothing you can’t use it on. It is anti bacterial, anti fungal, antiseptic and antiviral. Just what you need to help boost immunity for everyone in the family.
An aura cleansing diffuser blend is ideal after being around ‘negative’ or spiritually draining people. You will know if you need an aura cleanse by that heavy emotionally unbalanced feeling. I can get this feeling after socialising with large groups or even after being around someone who is depressed or upset. Work place environments can be a sea of various emotions and energies so this is a great blend to use after you get home from work. It also smells heavenly.
Pine essential oil is fresh and cleansing, I love to liven it up with lemon and pink grapefruit. It smells like something you just want to eat, very refreshing, purifying and mouthwatering. I like to diffuse this blend before visitors arrive or after cooking a big meal to freshen the house.
This is a vibrant and uplifting blend of ‘happy’ essential oils. Each of these oils has antidepressant properties and blended together they become a powerful trio. You will really enjoy the bright and lively notes of lemon, pink grapefruit and rose geranium. Use to boost your mood or as I do, or diffuse when the kids are feeling a bit grumpy on a rainy day.
A lovely herbal blend to promote feelings of calm and support clarity. Sage is well known for its cleansing and clearing properties, and has been use for years to help cleanse unwanted spiritual energies from buildings. I have blended this famous oil with fresh peppermint and basil. Both these oils are known to help fight fatigue and are fresh, clean and fragrant.
This is a mood booster and smells like a vase of freshly picked wild flowers. You will have the visitors asking what smells so good as soon as they walk into your home. It lingers long after the diffuser has turned off and also makes a gorgeous perfume blended into a solid base of beeswax and coconut oil.
I use this diffuser blend every week, especially when I feel like I need to come back down to earth after being busy and rushed. It helps to centre me and balance my mind, body and soul. The fragrance is earthy and seductive with spicy cinnamon, lively lemon, fresh and cleansing lemongrass and just a hint of healing bergamot oil. It is destined to become a firm favourite after the first push of that button.
I don’t know about you but I don’t get enough ‘Me’ time, and when I do I can get carried away with catching up on washing and household chores. I created this lovely blend of 3 divine oils to remind me to stop and take time out for me. It is another mouthwatering blend with a base of jasmine essential oil. Lemon and lime really liven up the floral notes of the jasmine and create a diffuser blend to invoke a little bit of self care.
There is no explaining how incredible the fragrance of spearmint really is, similar to peppermint but just in a league of its own. It pairs beautifully with tangy lively tangerine and will have you taking a moment to breath, centre yourself and be in the now.
