Good quality essential oils have so many uses, they not only smell incredible but can become a large part of your families natural first aid kit too.
Each essential oil has its own special therapeutic properties and suggested uses, but today let’s look at the best essential oils for itchy skin.
There are two reasons why skin could become itchy:
1 – The skin has come into contact with an irritant from the external environment. This could happen through touching or brushing against something which causes a reaction to the skin. It could be a plant, a new skincare product, or an insect bite.
2 – The second reason skin can become itchy is because the skin is the largest organ of the body and one of the best ways the body has to cleanse itself of unwanted toxins. Food additives can cause a reaction when ingested. Chemicals such as msg, artificial colourings, flavour enhancers and other additives can cause skin irritations when ingested. Even an itchy skin condition such as eczema needs to be treated from the inside. A naturopathic doctor will be able to look at what you are eating, or what stressors are going on in your life to cause the condition in the first place.
Note: If you have itchy skin that is severe or occurs for a prolonged time please see a health care professional. I can only advise of what has helped my family with minor itchy skin conditions. As always it is important to get to the root cause of any itching or irritation.
The Best Essential Oils For Itchy Skin.
Depending of the essential oil, they can sometimes cause skin reactions when they are not diluted in a carrier oil, so always dilute your oils before using, especially when treating a skin condition such as itching because the skin is feeling more sensitive and reactive than usual.
Essential oils are often diluted in a carrier oil at anything between 2 % – 10%. To treat an itchy skin with an essential oil I would keep the ratio of essential oils low because the skin is already irritated and just needs calming with a gentle application. If you have sensitive skin always patch test first.
Dilute 20 drops of essential oil in 30mls of either coconut or apricot oil. Both these carrier oils have anti inflammatory properties and are fantastic for calming irritated or itchy skin.
Lavender Essential Oil – Lavender essential oil has been used for centuries to treat skin irritations, including burns and eczema. It is calming to the skin and speeds healing. It is also an anti inflammatory and antiseptic, which is ideal for reducing skin redness or swelling.
Chamomile Essential Oil – A powerful antioxidant which skin loves, is ideal for calming red and inflamed skin and calming itching, especially from a mozzie bite or other insect. Combines very well with lavender which is why I have used it to create the skin soothing body bar recipe below.
Geranium Essential Oil – Geranium was used by the Egyptians to promote youthful glowing skin and is still used in many skin products today. It has anti inflammatory properties and is calming and healing to most skin types.
Frankincense Essential Oil – Frankincense essential oil is part of my daily skincare routine because of the powerful healing and anti ageing properties this oil has. It has also been found is soothe skin, and many say it actually prevents itchy skin from occurring in the first place. It is especially helpful for sensitive skin areas such as the face and neck.
Other essential oils to consider are those used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis, dermatitis and acne, and these are tea tree, sandalwood, basil, bergamot and myrrh.
Here is my favourite body bar recipe with the addition of two of the best essential oils for itchy skin, lavender and chamomile. It’s created to soothe and heal itchy skin conditions and irritations. We used this bar for anything from scratches, bruises, sun burn, dry skin, bug bites and itchy skin.
Skin Soothe Body Bar Recipe
1/4 cup coconut oil infused with calendula petals
1/4 cup cocoa butter
1/4 cup beeswax
18 drops of good quality lavender essential oil
12 drops of chamomile essential oil.
On a very low heat gently melt the cocoa butter, beeswax and coconut oil together. Remove from the heat and stir through the lavender and chamomile essential oils.
Be careful not to add the essential oils to a very hot mix because their therapeutic qualities and fragrance will diminish. If you are in a hot climate you may need to add a tablespoon of extra beeswax because the bar may be too soft. The same applies if you are in the middle of a cold winter, you may need to add a tablespoon of extra coconut oil so it isn’t rock hard.
This just makes your lotion bar recipe perfect to where you live.
Pour into a mould and allow a few hours in a cool place to set well. Use on your body as a skin softener, or to soothe itchy skin irritations.
