The fact that you have come to read a blog post titled ‘5 Signs You Are In The Wrong Job’ could be a sign right there do you think?
But let’s have a good look at the list first before we decide.
It was easy for me to write this list because I have had plenty of ‘wrong’ jobs along the way. I have worked in a service station, a hairdressers, a coffee shop, been part of a roading gang, been a teacher a model, and quite a few more. From dreading every Monday, to even taking up smoking just so I could have an excuse to be away from the building itself for 5 minutes, I can honestly say these jobs taught me so much.
They taught me what I did want, because they showed me what I didn’t want.
Here is my top 10 Signs You Are In The Wrong Job.
1 – You wake up every workday morning with a feeling of absolute dread.
I am sure we ALL know this feeling. One of my first teaching jobs was so bad, that I after weeks of working there I began to think crashing my car on the way would be better than actually being there! If that’s not a sign I don’t know what is right?
2 – The negativity from work flows into your personal life.
It affects you negatively even when you are not at your place of work. You get home from work and talk about all the crap that happened through the day, from what people said that they shouldn’t have said, to all the crap jobs you had to do with no thanks.
3 – The time goes so slowly.
Tick, tick, tick, you watch the hands on the clock slowly moving around the clock face, and you wish you could just move it a little bit forwards so you don’t have to endure another 5 hours of work. Each work day feels like a eek that you will never get back. Remember the saying ‘Time goes fast when you are having fun!’.
4 – You feel unappreciated and underutilized.
You have great ideas, your creative and your imagination is bursting with ways to make the world a better place. However it’s not the right place to voice these ideas, and when you have in the past no one listened anyway.
5 – You are physically, mentally and spiritually exhausted.
You flop exhausted into bed each night after work, yet still feel like you haven’t given what it was you were born to give.
6 – You can’t see a future in your current job.
Even if there is a ladder to climb, it doesn’t get you interested, excited or make going to work any happier.
7 – You only go to your job for the money.
If you won the lottery, the first thing you would do is call your boss and tell him to stick it!
8 – You arrive late or bang on time.
You purposely never arrive early to work and try not to stay late because you don’t want to have to be there for 1 minute more than is absolutely necessary.
9 – You are disappointed with what you do for a job.
It isn’t what you thought you would do when you were younger, and you yearn for more excitement.
10 – Work feels like a prison.
Being at work makes you feel trapped.
If you ticked 3 or more of these, there is a good chance it’s time to make some bigger, brighter plans for the future. But you aren’t alone, it’s very common for MOST people to feel this way about their job. But it doesn’t have to be this way for you. The one thing that will make your job more enjoyable right away, is having an ‘escape plan’. Start writing down all the things that you do want, and how you are going to start working towards the right job for you.
Know this. There are people in the world who absolutely love what they do, and would do it for free, and would do it forever if they could. Every day I get up and I get to create, write, to be a mum, and a business owner. These things light me up from the inside, time gets away from me, and my days feel like minutes! I too worked jobs that weren’t right for me, but they all hold a valuable lesson. They point us towards what we do want….and we will get what we want when we become clear about our goals.
What do you really want to be doing every day?
